Heidelberg Castle and a stay in Dilsburg, Germany

On our way south through Germany, we decided to make a stop in the town of Heidelberg, which is situated between the winding Neckar River and the foothills of the Odenwald forest. Our first destination was Heidelberg Schloss, primarily because parking for our van within the town itself was quite limited. The castle sits almost 300 feet above the town, offering stunning views, and is a fascinating blend of several interconnected buildings that surround an inner courtyard. Over the centuries, numerous additions and expansions have been made to the castle, each reflecting periods of German architectural history. It’s definitely beneficial to read up on the castle’s history before your visit or, better yet, join one of the informative tours available. Adult tickets are priced at €11, with children aged six and above paying €5.50. Admission includes access not only to the castle’s impressive courtyard and extensive barrel cellar but also to the German Pharmacy Museum. Additionally, the ticket price covers the funicular railway ride from the valley floor up to the castle, which is a far more enjoyable and less strenuous option compared to climbing the steep steps. While you need a ticket to enter the castle itself, you are free to walk around the exterior grounds and gardens without any charge. On-site, you'll find a gift shop, convenient restrooms, and a small café where the children excitedly chose a new flavor of ice cream to add to their annual ice cream challenge!

As we wandered leisurely through the gardens, the stunning view stretched far beyond, reaching over the winding Neckar River and the expansive valley, extending deep into the vast Rhine plain. On a clear, sunny day, the city of Mannheim can even be spotted on the horizon. We enjoyed watching the lively bustle of tourists as they explored the old town and crossed the historic old bridge. Meanwhile, Sam eagerly explored the water fountains, carefully searching for alpine newts and salamanders!

We found a charming campsite, Camping Unter´m Dilsberg, located further along the river, offering stunning views over Neckarsteinach. The drive down to the site provided scenic views of the valley and ruined castles. The campsite has recently come under new ownership and now features renovated toilet blocks, which are accessed by prepaid cards. These cards are loaded with 10 euros each, giving plenty of time for two long, relaxing hot showers. Additionally, the site includes a children’s play park, a small bar with bread service, and easy access to the river. We secured a pitch slightly up the riverbank but still on level ground. After setting up, we took a stroll down to the riverside and noticed a festival being set up right across the river. We quickly prepared a dinner of bratwurst and salads, then cycled along the riverside and over the footbridge to explore the village festivities. The atmosphere was fantastic, featuring live music, beer tents, and numerous stalls selling delicious Flammkuchen. The kids were delighted to find a stall offering gingerbread treats, and we all enjoyed the band performing. Our day came to an end back at the van, where we were treated to a display of fireworks lighting up the sky over the river.
